FOUNDATION TO FUND MEDICAL RESEARCH FOR SOUTH METRO PERTH

Spinnaker Health Research Foundation has committed further funding for research in south metropolitan Perth, opening two new grant rounds in July.

For 23 years Spinnaker has supported research that directly benefits the community and leads to improvements in patient care at Fremantle and Fiona Stanley Hospitals.  This month they opened grants for projects up to $15,000 in 2020.

Since 1996 the Foundation has funded almost $4,000,000 in projects, initially at Fremantle Hospital and, from 2016, at Fiona Stanley Hospital.  Projects have included the 25 year Fremantle Diabetes Study which commenced in 1992 and recruited more than 3,000 Fremantle residents.

Dana Henderson, CEO Spinnaker Health Research Foundation said the Foundation focuses on local projects that have a global impact “Medical research is ultimately about the community.  Our grants reflect that by identifying the critical health needs of our community and responding to them through research that seeks to improve diagnosis, treatment and care of patients in the hospitals we support.”

“In the last five years alone we have awarded more than 54 projects, valued at almost $1.4 million in areas such as mental health, cancer, heart disease and child and maternal health, including more than $300,000 on disease prevention.”

The 2020 Grants are now open for Expressions of Interest and applicants must be able to demonstrate how their research will translate to improved practice in the hospitals of the south metropolitan region.

“We were established by leaders of the Fremantle business community in 1996 who had a desire to ensure the local community would benefit from world class research in the very best tertiary hospital.  That commitment remains with us today as we expand to include all hospitals in the south metro region” Ms Henderson said.

Expressions of Interest close on August 9 before shortlisting of candidates for full application in September.  For more information visit: www.spinnakerhealth.org.au
